What is IN SITU in short?

IN SITU is the European platform for artistic creation in public space. Since 2003, it has supported more than 200 artists working outside conventional venues and contributing to the transformation of our territories. IN SITU is an ecosystem connecting a new generation of artists with audiences, programmers, and key-players involved in the economic, political and social realities around Europe. IN SITU develops an ecology of creation based on transnational artistic workshops and laboratories, European and international residencies and collective mentoring for pilot artistic projects. IN SITU also designs tailored consulting and expertise for European cities, online training modules (MOOC) and a Think Tank dedicated to artistic creation in public space.

IN SITU is led by Lieux publics - European and national center for artistic creation in public space (France), and brings together 20 partners from 12 countries: Artopolis Association / PLACCC Festival (Hungary), Atelier 231 / Festival Viva Cité (France), CIFAS (Belgium), Ctyri dny / 4+4 Days in Motion (Czech Republic), FAI-AR (France), Freedom Festival (United Kingdom), Kimmel Center (The United States of America), Metropolis (Denmark), La Paperie (France), La Strada Graz (Austria), Les Tombées de la Nuit (France), Lieux publics (France), Norfolk & Norwich Festival (United Kingdom), Teatri ODA (Kosovo), Theater op de Markt (Belgium), On the Move (Belgium), Østfold kulturutvikling (Norway), Oerol Festival (The Netherlands), Terni Festival (Italy), UZ Arts (United Kingdom).

IN SITU ACT 2016 - 2020 is co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union.

Since 2018, the IN SITU Cloud gathers new associated members around IN SITU.

Who is IN SITU?

2003
It all started around a table somewhere in Europe. Five festival managers and artistic centre directors had the same hunch that the future of artistic creation in the public space would play out on a European scale. In five languages, they laid down the foundations of IN SITU and art in the European public space.

2016
The idea has won over support and IN SITU now boasts 20 partners in Angers, Budapest, Brussels, Copenhagen, Fredrikstad, Graz, Glasgow, Hull, Marseille, Neerpelt, Norwich, Philadelphia, Prague, Pristina, Rennes, Sotteville-lès-Rouen, Terni, Terschelling and beyond. Since 2018, the IN SITU Cloud gathers new associated members around IN SITU.There are now even more people to identify artists and support them as they explore new territories, and even more colleagues with whom we can think about our continent’s issues. This is an artistic adventure, with a long history of friendship, empathy and trust.

What are the IN SITU projects?

IN SITU ACT (2016 - 2020)

ACT is an ecosystem designed to structure the sector of artistic creation in public space and its artists, support their emergence and improve their visibility.

In a nutshell, IN SITU ACT is about:
- Transnational writing seminars;
- Collective mentoring for projects under development;
- 6 transnational pilot artistic projects supported by all the partners;
- European and international residencies;
- Printed and digital publications;
- Training modules for professionals in the form of a MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) and tailored consulting and expertise for European cities.
- A European Think tank made out of elected representatives, artists, as well as cultural and urban experts.

PREVIOUS PROJECTS

IN SITU PLATFORM (2014 - 2017)
Granted with a three year funding, the IN SITU Platform 2014 – 2017 aimed to highlight and promote emerging artists working outside conventional venues and contributing to the transformation of our territories. Over the course of three years, IN SITU Platform was developing a communication and brand narrative (storytelling), which was designed as a story to be shared with the general public, mixing technological creativity and high visibility at large popular events.

META (2011 - 2016)
META, the Manifest of Europe for Transformation through Art. The name of the project was a program in itself. Nine years after its creation, the IN SITU network intended to develop with META the idea of a societal function of art and artistic creation in public space while asserting its support in accompanying a humanistic project of contemporary European society. For this project, IN SITU has brought together 19 partners, covering 14 countries in the European Union and reaching out appreciably towards Central Europe.
2011-2016. It took nothing less than five years to implement the ambitious actions focussing on three main themes: transformation, walking and the art of living together.

How can I join the network?

I am an artist

Each year each IN SITU partner introduces a new artist to the network. They all have their own selection criteria. To know more check out the list of our partners (Q2 - WHO IS IN SITU?) and contact them directly.

I am a Festival, a residency centre, a cultural structure...

We are currently not looking for new members. However, since 2018, we are welcoming new associated members.
You can find us at various international events and meetings, and during IN SITU members' festivals. We are always interested in meeting new people and creating new collaborations. To contact us : insitu@lieuxpublics.com
