with 'Gaïa'

This year, Lieux publics once again invites Luke Jerram to the Cité des arts de la rue to present Gaia, a 7-meter-diameter representation of the planet Earth, fashioned from high-definition NASA images and accompanied by an original soundtrack composed by Dan Jones (award-winning composer and sound designer). The work provides an unprecedented encounter with the Earth within the Cité des arts de la rue, as we might see it from space.

Luke Jerram created "Gaia" to draw attention to the fragility of our planet, to question our role in its preservation and our behavior in the face of the consequences of climate change. This contemplative work awakens our senses and produces what the American author Frank White called in 1987 "The Overview Effect": a cognitive shock, an awareness that some astronauts experience during a space flight.

The Blue Planet is thus perceived as a small, fragile ball of life, a pale blue dot suspended in the void, protected from the vacuum of space by the thin layer of atmosphere, like a living organism in urgent need of protection. The work also shifts our perception of humanity, offering the viewer the perspective of a planet where all societies are interconnected, in an environment shared with the living.
