R3LN4CHT is the artistic brainchild of performance artist Didi Kreike. Rooted in a queer/counter perspective, their practice explores alternative futures and challenges dominant narratives. The collective functions as a modular system, ever-changing it’s pack of creatives. Originating from their collective hivemind — they are claiming the ‘art’ in party, the ‘heat’ in theater and the ‘AV’ in rave.
R3LN4CHT advocates alternative ways of togetherness, disrupting the status quo, and creating spaces where new realities emerge. The collective invites audiences to actively engage in their radical proposals.
R3LN4CHT works cross-disciplinary, allowing fluidity and innovation in their artistic approach. Through immersive installations and performances, R3LN4CHT fully engages the senses, transforming each space to enhance storytelling and atmosphere. This adaptability ensures that every project remains dynamic, relevant, and thought-provoking.
Didi Kreike (they/them, b. 1994) graduated in 2018 from the Performance-program at the Maastricht Institute of Performative Arts. During and after their studies, they specialized in site-specific theater, focusing on the intersection of installation art and nightlife. With a strong affinity for punk- and club culture, Didi founded R3LN4CHT as a continuation of their artistic practice.
Is Angela Working Tonight? is a multi-channel sound performance in which R3LN4CHT experiments with the definitions of pop concert, space, and composition. This performative installation is a follow-up to R3LN4CHT's concept album Safety Sirens.
The core of this project is an ever-growing collection of interviews with stakeholders about safety work in nightlife. Following the dramaturgy of a club night, R3LN4CHT tries to unravel the (hidden) structures surrounding social safety; aiming to expose the underlying nuances of our contemporary obsession with security.
All collected stories are embodied by the fictional awareness protagonist Angela and her friend Elodie. They started working as awareness team members at Club Oblivion. Gradually, their altruistic “I care about us” shifts into an authoritarian “I care about me.” Their universe is ambiguous, and through the performance, they also discover their own doubts and desires. The interplay of soundscapes, confessionals, vocals, and textures immerses the audience in a 360-degree live experience, set within a spatial sound design.
* Is Angela Working Tonight? is used as a real safe word to identify people in danger at the bar. This project cultivates this fact and explores new code words or languages through new rounds of interviews.
