MOOC Cultural Rights in Public Space

Discover IN SITU's new MOOC

MOOC

A new MOOC, born from a unique collaboration between the FAI AR and IN SITU, supported by various expert partners on the issues of art in public space.

The (UN)COMMON SPACES project led by IN SITU from 2020 to 2024 aimed at building a sequel to the MOOC Create in Public Space. In addition to annual reopenings, the MOOC Cultural Rights in Public Space intends to offer an enhanced experience, with new content and the production of additional interviews.

In 2024, the new MOOC Cultural Rights in Public Space is created in collaboration with Réseau Culture 21. This MOOC offers 7 new themes, with both theoretical content and experience-based testimonies from various artists and professionals to capture the diversity of approaches to cultural rights, applied in the sector of artistic creation in public space

The history

The idea of the MOOC Create in Public Space was developed in 2016 as part of the IN SITU ACT programme.

As IN SITU has grown through the years, its expertise and activities have become clearer: it serves to identify artists, facilitate transnational artistic project laboratories and incubators, support co-productions and publicize emerging work, organise combined European and international residencies, perform artistic research, run conferences for people working in this area, operate a Think Tank and develop the first MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) dedicated to artistic creation in public space with the FAI-AR. IN SITU ACT includes 20 partners and 8 associated partners from 19 countries and as many contexts, practices and aesthetic approaches.

In 2016, IN SITU launched ACT, a large-scale European project funded by the European Commission up to 2020 as part of the Creative Europe programme.

A new edition focusing on cultural rights

The MOOC Cultural Rights in Public Space is an action of IN SITU, the European platform for artistic creation in public space, in the frame of the project (UN)COMMON SPACES, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union.

The MOOC Cultural Rights in the Public Space is organized around 7 themes:

- Coexistence and conflicts of use
- Policymake commissions and citizen participation
- Borders and mobility
- Fiction and reality
- Interdependent relationships and governance
- Licit and illicit appropriations
- Representations and power relations

Each of these themes is addressed through different types of content:

- a lesson by Réseau Culture 21
- filmed interviews with French and European professionals (artists, programmers, experts)
- exercises and questions to support the analysis of cultural rights issues in practice.
